Guess is a brand that had been very close to all our hearts, since all of us ladies have owned at least one Guess bag in their collection. I still have one or two at least in my current bag display, which puts the brand into a language we all understand.
Guess began in 1981 as a book of styles by Georges Marciano. Along the years it had a lot of ups and downs, including sweatshop allegations (1990s) and logo infringement (2009).
To be honest I haven’t been very interested in Guess as a handbag lately. I’ve been seeing their store in so many outlet malls, with the same old patterns and no innovation. Recently I thought of checking their website and I couldn’t help but feel that I’ve seen their new bags elsewhere. Where you might ask? Well, non other than Louis Vuitton, Prada and Fendi! Little did I know I will hit the high end fashion district, but for 80% less on the price tag.
Here are some examples:
1. Cathleen Top Handle Dome Satchel Vs Louis Vuitton Alma
A very similar shape, color scheme and branding, especially with the way the bottom of the purse is shaped to define the bag. Only few differences in the size of the handle as well as the hardware which is in the classic guess style.
2. Guess Cabana Logo Society Tote Bag VS Louis Vuitton OnTheGo 2Way Big Tote
Take even this one for example. Left side we have Guess Cabana Logo Society Tote Bag and on the right side Louis Vuitton OnTheGo 2Way Big Tote. They both have a similar shape, the pattern is different on front and sides of the bag, same as Louis Vuitton. Even the front side has a combination of shapes and logos, same as the classical Louis Vuitton. I was not even very familiar with the OnTheGO bag from LV when I saw the one from Guess. The logo resemblance however made me think of LV instantly and upon a quick search, I realized I was right.
You think we are done? Nope.
3. Peony Classic Convertible Crossbody VS Louis Vuitton Pochette Metis
One of the biggest strikes for me was the Peony cross body bag in comparison with LV’s Pochette Metis. I mean, WOW! What a resemblance! Just the choice of the pattern would have been enough for me to be honest. And if I see the guess bag and I immediately think of another, I think it is a clear sign of copycatting.
4. Guess Asher Shoulder Bag VS Prada Sidonie Bag
Last comparison we have is with the beloved Prada Sidonie bag, where again the resemblance is uncanny. On the left side we have the Guess Asher Shoulder Bag and on the right side we have the Prada latest new model, Sidonie Bag. Crazy resemblance on such a difference price tag. While you can buy the Guess one on EUR 118, the Prada one retails with a from price of EUR 2400. The difference is staggering, yet the style is so similar.
When we look at the history of Guess, and we see they have already had a huge lawsuit with Gucci for a clear logo infringement which only closed in 2018 in favor of Gucci, we can’t help but wonder why is Guess playing the same game even after that? Why do we still have either clear copy’s of established fashion brands or tacky boring styles that we see all over the outlet malls? When will Guess have a personality which is unique to them?
I miss the times when I would see one unique and cute Guess bag and fall in love. Like when they launched their Delaney Floral Crossbody bags and I thought about it for days. I simply knew I had to have it and I haven’t had this with Guess for such a long while.
The lack of vision and uniqueness has definitely damaged the brand’s image over the years. This combined with the expanded presence in the outlet malls, only made it worse. It became many times synonym with cheap and tacky and no one wants that anymore.
What do you think? Are you buying Guess handbags in 2020? Are you bothered by the uncanny similarities between brands?
